In these final months of 2025, we recognize the mounting challenges our communities have faced this year. The most marginalized among us bear the brunt of state violence and oppression here in the U.S. and around the world.
In these final months of 2025, we recognize the mounting challenges our communities have faced this year. The most marginalized among us bear the brunt of state violence and oppression here in the U.S. and around the world. Still, we work to build solidarity and power. We know that no single action we take can remedy the immense injustices committed against our families, friends, loved ones, and neighbors. But we know that each action strengthens our collective. In this month’s newsletter, we will highlight the amazing work that our members and allies are doing to empower and protect each other. Stronger together, we move forward.
In the News
On Thursday, November 13th, New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia held a Prayer Vigil and Eucharistic Procession outside of the ICE Field Office at 114 North 8th St. A group of more than 75 people, made up of clergy, laypeople, and allies, gathered to stand in prayer and solidarity for those detained and at risk of deportation. We are grateful to the New Sanctuary Movement for speaking out against the inhumane and illegal actions of ICE.
One of the best ways to be together in the fight is to share the things that make our lives more beautiful! Last month, worker leaders and hard-working volunteers led artistic activities to celebrate the Day of the Dead, bringing joy and creativity to our movement during this special weekend of events. Our littlest community members loved having their faces painted, and we loved seeing these beautiful, smiling “calacas.” New volunteers were at our information tables throughout South Philly, sharing reliable resources with the community. Thank you to our worker leaders Vero and Erika for bringing your art to the table making this event a success!
FDR ICE Watch Reportback
From June to October, El Comité partnered with allies from FDR Park and Jewish Voices for Peace (JVP) and others to organize a regular ICE watch at the Southeast Asian (SEA) and Latino Markets. This initiative emerged as a direct ask from community members who needed “eyes and ears on the ground” to feel protected from a potential raid by ICE at the market early in June. Here are some successes from this effort:
Over the months, we engaged approximately 20-25 volunteers to support the weekly watch.
We were able to connect with almost every vendor at the markets and distribute Know Your Rights materials in multiple languages.
Vendors expressed that they felt supported by our consistent presence on Sundays.
Thanks to our awesome volunteers for organizing this weekly watch since the summer! We will share more information in the spring about how to get involved during the next market season.
El Comité Testimony at City Council in Support of Reproductive Justice
On Thursday, November 13th, El Comité joined advocates at City Hall to support Kendra Brooks’ resolution recognizing abortion rights as human rights. CM Brooks brought forth this resolution in response to budget cuts in the city’s 2026 budget which will greatly impact reproductive health services in Philly. We are so proud of Comité member Irais, who brought powerful testimony to uplift this important resolution. She explained that “this resolution confirms women’s right to access abortion safely now and in the future. It is an affirmation of women’s commitment to live their lives by making their own choices. Not having the choices imposed on them by their governments.” Thank you, Irais, for lifting your voice and affirming our commitment to reproductive justice!
Orientation Program Reportback from Lucia
For the first time ever this Fall, we implemented a three part Orientation Program for our members. The goal of is to provide our base with basic information and training around labor rights and organizing. We spent our first session getting to know each other and exploring our individual leadership styles. Then, we learned about local labor laws and workers’ rights in the city of Philadelphia. During the third session, we trained workers on how to advocate for their rights in the workplace and how to tap into collective action to make meaningful change. We are proud to say we had over 10 restaurant workers who attended our program and will be graduating with us. We plan to implement this training next year! See you in 2026!

En estos últimos meses de 2025, reconocemos los crecientes desafíos que nuestras comunidades han enfrentado este año. Les más marginadxs entre nosotrxs sufren las consecuencias de la violencia y la opresión estatal, tanto en Estados Unidos como en todo el mundo. Aun así, trabajamos para fortalecer la solidaridad y el poder. Sabemos que ninguna acción individual puede remediar las inmensas injusticias cometidas contra nuestras familias, amigxs, seres queridxs y vecinos. Pero sabemos que cada acción fortalece a nuestro colectivo. En el boletín de este mes, destacaremos la increíble labor que realizan nuestrxs miembrxs y aliadxs para empoderarse y protegerse mutuamente. Juntxs, más fuertes, avanzamos.

El jueves 13 de noviembre, el Movimiento Nuevo Santuario de Filadelfia celebró una Vigilia de Oración y una Procesión Eucarística frente a la Oficina de ICE, ubicada en 114 North 8th St. Un grupo de más de 75 personas, entre clérigxs, laicxs y aliadxs, se reunió para orar y solidarizarse con las personas detenidas y en riesgo de deportación. Agradecemos al Movimiento Nuevo Santuario por denunciar las acciones inhumanas e ilegales de ICE.
Una de las mejores maneras de unirnos en la lucha es compartir las cosas que nos hacen la vida más hermosa. El mes pasado, el Comité de Trabajadores de Restaurantes y sus super voluntarixs organizaron actividades artísticas para celebrar el Día de Muertos, aportando alegría y creatividad a nuestro movimiento durante este fin de semana especial de eventos. A les más pequeñxs de la comunidad les encantó que les pintaran la cara, y a nosotros nos encantó ver estas hermosas y sonrientes “calacas”. Nuevxs voluntarixs estuvieron en nuestras mesas de información por el Sur de Filadelfia, compartiendo recursos confiables con la comunidad. ¡Gracias a nuestras líderes trabajadoras, Vero y Erika, por su arte y por hacer de este evento un éxito!
Reportaje del ICE Watch en el Parque FDR
De Junio a Octubre, El Comité colaboró con aliados de FDR Park y Voces Judías por la Paz (JVP) para organizar una vigilancia frecuente de ICE en los mercados del Sudeste Asiático (SEA) y Latine. Esta iniciativa surgió a petición directa de miembrxs de la comunidad que necesitaban presencia local para sentirse protegidxs ante una posible redada de ICE en el mercado a principios de Junio. Aquí son unos logros de este esfuerzo:
A lo largo de los meses, involucramos a aproximadamente 20-25 voluntarixs para apoyar la vigilancia semanal.
Lxs vendedorxs expresaron que se sintieron apoyadxs por nuestra presencia constante los domingos.

Testimonio de El Comité ante city council en apoyo a la justicia reproductiva
El jueves 13 de noviembre, El Comité se unió a defensores en City Council para apoyar la resolución de Kendra Brooks que reconoce el derecho al aborto como un derecho humano. La CM Brooks presentó esta resolución en respuesta a los recortes presupuestarios de la ciudad para 2026, que afectarán significativamente los servicios de salud reproductiva en Filadelfia. Estamos muy orgullosos de Irais, miembro del Comité, quien brindó un poderoso testimonio para apoyar esta importante resolución. Reportaje del Programa de Orientación
Por primera vez este Otoño, implementamos un Programa de Orientación de tres partes para nuestrxs miembrxs. El objetivo de este programa es brindar a nuestra base información básica y capacitación sobre derechos laborales y organización. En la primera sesión, nos conocimos y exploramos nuestros estilos de liderazgo. Luego, aprendimos sobre las leyes laborales locales y los derechos de lxs trabajadorxs en la ciudad de Filadelfia. En la tercera, capacitamos a trabajadores sobre cómo defender sus derechos en el lugar de trabajo y cómo aprovechar la acción colectiva para generar cambios significativos. Nos enorgullece decir que más de 10 trabajadorxs de restaurantes asistieron a nuestro programa y se graduarán con nosotrxs. ¡Planeamos implementar esta capacitación el próximo año! ¡Nos vemos en 2026!
